HIQA inspectors have highlighted serious concerns at Oakwood Private Nursing Home in Ballaghaderreen following an inspection earlier this year.
The Roscommon centre is a purpose-built facility that can accommodate a maximum of 61 dependent people aged 18 years and over, with 50 residents in attendance on the day of inspection.
Major issues with the facilities fire prevention plans, infection control and premises were all highlighted in the inspector's report.
Inspectors reported that on the day of inspection in mid February of this year, that they were unhappy with the fire precautions in place at the centre.
Issues were raised over the difficulties staff and residents would face in an evacuation in the case of emergency, with the chosen escape routes for resident's apartments branded unsatisfactory by the HIQA team.
Poor practices were also observed in the laundry room where a large accumulation of lint was observed in the facility's commercial dryer.
In an effort to provide assurances to the Chief Inspector on the day of the inspection, the providers committed to ensuring a permanent staff member would be in place in the first floor lobby while residents were using rooms on that floor, while another assurance included the decision to ensure all resident's TVs were unplugged over night.
In the case of governance, the provider was found to be unsatisfactory in the provision of an appropriate management system to provide safe and consistent care to residents.
While issues highlighted in the area of resident's rights found some concerns in the privacy of residents in double rooms.
The centre has confirmed it's working with the Health body to conduct a series of works addressing the concerns raised by the HIQA inspector.
