A number of people have been seriously injured following a road crash on the N5 this morning.
The multi-vehicle collision occured between Strokestown and Tarmonbarry just after 8am.
The road remains closed and emergency services remain at the scene.
Elsewhere, a man has been hospitalised following a serious road on the N55 near Glasson.
The crash, which involved two vehicles, occurred near the Jolly Pigeons pub on the Athlone-Ballymahon road at around 8.15am.
Gardai in Athlone expect the road to remain closed until approximately 2pm this afternoon.
Road conditions are being described as treacherous in many areas following a night of hard frost and below zero temperatures with Gardai urging drivers to slow down and to proceed with caution, especially on untreated roads.
