The ESB expects the timeline for the demolition of the power stations in Lanesboro and Shannonbridge and the rehabilitation of the site to be much longer than initially predicted.
The semi-state company has confirmed that it intends to move forward with simultaneous plans for the now closed power stations in Longford and Offaly.
Earlier this year the ESB confirmed that it hoped to develop 'renewable energy hubs' at the sites of its former power stations in Lanesboro and in Shannonbridge following their closure late last year.
Despite hopes to the contrary, a series of internal reports commissioned by the ESB found that the plants would need to be entirely demolished with plans to rehabilitate the areas being developed.
In June of this year, the ESB confirmed that it hoped to hand over some buildings associated with the power plants to local communities and to develop 'renewable energy hubs'.
The ESB has now confirmed that it intends to progress works at both sites at the same time which will require a detailed planning application being lodged.
According to a spokesperson this "will extend the project timeline significantly" but will offer "many advantages across the various engineering disciplines while planning both project aspects.
