The Department of Psychiatry at Roscommon University Hospital has seen compliance levels with Mental Health Commission standards drop over 10 percent in the last 5 years. The 2023 report for the Service at Roscommon Hospital found a number of issues in need of immediate attention from the Heath Service.
The Department of Psychiatry in Roscommon is located on the ground floor at the rear of the Hospital. It's registered for 24 beds, and is split into the general ward with 22 beds and two additional beds in the High-Dependency Unit.
Inspections conducted at the unit showed that the centre demonstrated that they provided safe care in areas such as therapeutic interventions, infection control, staff interactions and food quality. However a number of were found in the centre's management of medication, the premises, personal privacy and individual care plans.
According to the Mental Health Commission report, the administration of medicines was not carried out in a safe manner, while a fire risk assessment had indicated several outstanding fire risk issues on the grounds of the unit. On the day of inspection, the premises were not found to be clean, with cigarette butts on the ground of an outdoor area, creating a smell of smoke in the day room, while the seclusion room was also not found to be clean.
The Department of Psychiatry at Roscommon University Hospital was found to be non compliant in 6 out of 29 regulations in the MHC report. Of these non compliance's, two were designated as critical risks, two were high risks, with the last two registered as moderate and low risks.
As part of the process, the HSE has presented a list of corrective actions and plans to address the concerns raised in the MHC report.
