Brendan Barry says he believes repairing the road and getting the funding to do it will present a significant challenge to the council.

A Leitrim councillor says it's likely to take a significant amount of funding to repair a local road in the Drumshanbo areas after part of its embankment collapsed recently.

A section of the bank along the L7306 in Aghagrania, Drumshanbo was eroded by the high flow of water in the river running beside it last Friday.

Up to 50 metres of the bank collapsed and the road has had to be closed in the interests of public safety.

Local councillor Brendan Barry says there's a sharp drop from the road down towards the river, similar to several others around the country and there was no way of knowing this was likely to happen.

He says he believes repairing the road and getting the funding to do it will present a significant challenge to the council.

"To look at it, it's quite a significant drop from the edge of the road down to the river, you could be talking 50 or 60 feet, which is a long way if someone were to fall in there. It's going to be a significant job to make this road safe so it can be passable again and can be opened up again to the locals. Anyone travelling along this road would never have seen a risk or thought there would have been a risk of the bank slipping down into the river".
