It's hoped that work on improving safety on the R446 in the Summerhill area of south Roscommon can begin as soon as Level 5 restrictions are lifted.
The Department of Transport approved 300,000 euro for Roscommon County Council this week for the upgrade of the road from Monksland to Colaiste Chiarain.
It will include the demarcation of the hard shoulder and reflective knockdown bollards allowing for safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
Further funding will be required to complete the overall traffic management plan for the area which will be finalised as part of the Joint Transport Plan for Athlone later this year.
