There are just four properties available for a total of 81 people waiting for Council homes in an area of south Leitrim.
The November meeting of Ballinamore M.D heard that there are just a handful of properties available for those on council waiting lists in Drumshanbo/Drumcong or the Keshcarriggan areas.
The meeting heard that the Leitrim countryside was 'strewn' with empty houses but that many people on waiting lists showed a preference to live in urban areas rather than in the rural areas.
Councillor Paddy O'Rourke told the meeting that a home near him had been restored by a couple recently and was occupied for the first time since 1971.
It was also suggested that a national scheme to bring vacant homes back into stock would be required.
Councillor Enda McGloin hopes the council may be able to examine alternative options to improve the availability
