Sinn Fein is treating with caution the move by the government to support legislation to establish a single authority for the management of floods on the river Shannon.
The Bill to establish a River Shannon Management Agency was supported by OPW Minister Paul o’ Donovan at its second reading last night.
It was put forward Roscommon Galway TD Claire Kerrane and Longford Westmeath TD Sorcha Clarke and other Sinn Fein TDs along the catchment to manage, protect and mitigate against flooding.
Minister O’ Donovan asked that time be given to allow cross party co-operation on the proposal and his own considerations.
Deputy Claire Kerrane says while it was somewhat positive that the proposal wasn’t opposed, there has already been ample opportunity to prepare the ground for a single authority.
