Sinn Féin TD Brian Stanley is set to apologise to his Public Accounts Committee colleagues this evening for a controversial tweet.

Some opposition TDs believe his comments glorified the killing of British soldiers during the War of Independence and The Troubles.

At half four this afternoon the Public Accounts Committee meets and will hear a full apology from Sinn Féin's Brian Stanley.

The chairman of the committee tweeted at the weekend commenting on two events during the War of Independence and the Troubles which killed a total of 35 British soldiers.

Deputy Stanley has been widely criticised across the political divide for his comments with calls for him to be sanctioned by the party.

However, Sinn Féin say he won't be asked to step down as chair of the PAC - a job that comes with a 10,000 euro top up to his Dáil salary.

Some of his committee colleagues don't think that goes far enough and while it's an internal matter for Sinn Féin they feel there should be some sanction.

Ceann Comhairle Sean O Fearghail has written to DUP leader Arlene Foster saying a credible political response is needed.

That itself has led to unease among some TDs who feel the impartial chairman should not be weighing in on the argument
