After 40 years of service to the party, the Laois Offaly TD said his departure was due to an unfair internal inquiry into a complaint made against him.

TD Martin Kenny is set to be confirmed as the Leitrim representative, with the party running a two-candidate strategy in Sligo-Leitrim. 

TD Martin Kenny will stand on the Leitrim side of the constituency, and the party will also select a Sligo candidate.

Sinn Féin is describing it as "a fiasco", saying it was meant to be open in 2022 but is way over-budget.
