A major 3 million euro investment into broadband infrastructure in Roscommon town has connected over 1600 homes and businesses to high speed internet.
Broadband network operator Siro has announced the roll out of the multimillion euro works, with building work commencing last year.
The plan saw upwards of 2,600 premises connected to high speed internet, with 70 percent of the work now complete and online.
Residents and businesses in the completed areas can know contact network providers and sign up to use the new infrastructure, with the remaining works set to be complete by late Spring.
SIRO's roll-out of a full fibre broadband network in Roscommon is part of the company's ongoing network expansion, targeting 770,000 premises in 154 towns and cities across Ireland, with the National Broadband Plan focusing on rural areas.
Amanda Glancy, Director of Corporate Affairs with the Company, says businesses are already signing up in the town:
''That 70% is live, so we build in clusters and once we finish a cluster those homes go live. That 70% can connect since the end of December and I already know one or two businesses in Roscommon who have already signed up and are connected, it's ready to go.''
