The preferred location of a new 13 million euro sports centre for Roscommon has been identified.
The grounds of the Convent of Mercy Secondary School in Roscommon town has been selected as the local authority's preferred site for the build.
The project would see a sporting centre of excellence created in the town including a substantial sports hall, pitches and other smaller sports studios.
The plans are being supported by a range of local and national sporting organisation's including Special Olympics Ireland, the LGFA, Basketball Ireland and Volleyball Ireland.
It's hoped that while the centre will need funding to operate in the short term, it's forecasted to be self sufficient in the long term.
Local councillor Orla Leydon has welcomed the project, but says the public interest has to be taken into account.
