The Sixth Infantry Battalion based in Custume Barracks in Athlone is today celebrating its centenary.
The unit was first established on the 24th of January 1923 as part of the first attempts to organise the newly established national army.
The battalion conducted a formal parade at the barracks this morning with an inspection of the personnel of sixth Infantry Battalion also taking place.
While the parade was not open to the public, past and present members of the battalion were in attendance.
Lieutenant Stephen McEvoy has been explaining the role of the Sixth Infantry Battalion.
''At the moment the unit is in preparation to deploy overseas to UNDOF, but on a day to day basis, we'd have routine security duties, constant tactical and physical training, just this week it was a platoon of two star soldiers passed out, so they finished their final stage of training to start a career as soldiers and those were trained by Sixth Infantry Battalion.
