Two hospitals that serve the Shannonside region were among the five most overcrowded in the country last month.
A total of 1,051 patients were treated on trolleys in University Hospital Galway last month - the second worst in Ireland.
The country's fourth most overcrowded hospital was Sligo University Hospital, at 617 - while the national total was almost 9,500.
Ballaghaderreen-based councillor Micheál Frain says the situation is concerning for patients in west Roscommon.
"No doubt it's terrible but it's not surprising at the same time, considering that those two hospitals - in Galway and in Sligo - are feeder hospitals for a huge part of the midlands and the west," said the Independent politician.
"With the downgrading of hospitals over the years, we have seen a trend in the number of people that have reported to the likes of Galway and Sligo from this particular region. And the resources seemingly aren't in place.
"We have heard the INMO (Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation) and all the unions looking for extra services in the hospitals.
"It's very, very alarming at this stage, and now we are in the summer months. Give it another couple of months and we are going into winter - what's it going to be like at that stage?"
