Nationally, 700 patients are on trolleys as of this morning with over 100 waiting for a bed in University Hospital Limerick.

A recent report compiled by the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation shows over 100 patients have been waiting on trolleys or in wards in hospitals across the region.

This is over double the figure of last year, where 15 were waiting on trolleys

So far, two baby girls have been safely delivered across the counties since midnight.

And Roscommon-Galway TD Martin Daly, from Fianna Fáil, says action is needed to address the problem.

The single-vehicle collision occurred on a local road between Kinlough and Garrision, in the Derryherk area, shortly before 7am this morning.

Nationally, University Hospital Limerick has the highest number of patients on trolleys, at 120.

The victim has been named locally as Tom Mulhern, from Ardcarne, Cootehall, Boyle, who was well known in the horse industry.
