Smoking related illnesses were the main cause of death in the Shannonside region in 2021.
That's according to newly released data from the Central Statistics Office on the mortality rates for the country.
1,081 deaths were registered across Longford, Leitrim and Roscommon in 2021.
316 people in the region had their cause of death registered as due to a smoking related illness in 2021.
That was followed closely by death due to Malignant neoplasms or cancers, where 295 people in Roscommon, Longford and Leitrim lost their lives over the 12 months.
Ischaemic heart disease was another major cause of death, with the condition listed on the death certificates of 140 people in the region.
Other significant illnesses that were registered over the year include over 100 people passing away with respiratory diseases and 89 people with conditions linked to alcohol intake.
Pneumonia was also responsible for the death of 34 people in 2021.
The mortality figures locally for 2021 were slightly below that of the previous year, where 1,087 deaths were registered.
