Former mayor of Roscommon and long-time councillor, Martin Connaughton, has been remembered as a warm, friendly and likeable man at his funeral.
The tribute was paid by Fr Eugene McLoughlin at his funeral Mass in Athleague in the past hour.
Martin died suddenly on his farm while attending to his sheep with his son, Ivan, on Monday.
A picture of sheep and elections posters were brought to the altar at the start of the Mass, along with a mobile phone, playing cards and keys to his famous 'tractor-cum-Jeep'.
The Gospel was also about sheep, featuring the Good Shepard, while prayers of the faithful were read by his eight grandchildren.
His son, Ivan, who also served as mayor of Roscommon, fondly remembered his father at the funeral Mass.
Fr McLoughlin said he died peacefully.
