The son of a Defence Forces member killed by the provisional IRA in Leitrim has called for more education on the Troubles.
Ballinamuck native, Private Patrick Kelly was killed in the line of duty during the rescue of kidnapped supermarket executive, Don Tidey near Ballinamore in 1983.
His son, David Kelly has accepted that the apologies of the Irish Women's soccer team after the singing of a pro-IRA song in the dressing room was sincere and the words of manager, Vera Pauw gave him comfort.
However, speaking on the Joe Finnegan show earlier, he says that younger people need to be educated on the human cost of what really happened during the Troubles.
"We've got to look at how the history of the Troubles is being taught in schools and also we've got to look at what authorities like the FAI are willing to do. Would they be willing to meet and speak to victims and survivors of the IRA and loyalist groups so that they can learn from the human cost of what we went through"?
