Residents at a Leitrim nursing home are enjoying the company of a special companion in recent months.
Blossom the Shih Tzu has been introduced to Ballinamore Community Nursing Unit and has proved a big hit with everyone.
Leitrim Manager Mary Mealy says the dog visits daily to enhance the residents' everyday experiences.
She says the 7 year old canine is true to her name, allowing affection and conversation to blossom.
"I see a huge difference in the residents in that when she comes into their room or I bring her round, it gives them a different focus point so maybe if they were feeling lonely or they're missing home or their family and a lot of them are here because they're depending on our care, she somehow comes into the bedrooms, looks at their items with them, and just takes part in what they're doing".
