A special incident room has been established at Roscommon Garda station to investigate a significant upsurge in burglaries in the district.
There has been an almost 100% rise in the number of burglaries reported so far this year, compared to all of 2020 according to the local Garda Superintendent.
The final Roscommon Joint Policing Committee meeting of the year has heard that there is a major upsurge in burglaries across the county compared to last year.
17 burglaries were reported to Roscommon District garda in all of 2020 and so far this year 33 have been recorded on Pulse - including 14 alone in November.
In response, Garda Superintendent Fran Nicholson told the latest meeting of the county's JPC that an incident room, normally reserved for top-level crimes such as rape or murder, has now been established to identify the culprits.
He claimed that travelling criminals were most likely behind the burglary spree, including four break-ins over last weekend.
He noted that other areas, such as Carrick-on-Shannon and Longford, have also recorded a rise in burglaries recently and that the incident room is collating all information.
He confirmed extra resources have been added to areas affected by burglaries and more patrols were taking place in order to prevent further incidents.
