New speed limits on local or rural roads have taken effect.
The 'default' limit has now reduced from 80 kilometres an hour to 60 kilometres an hour.
A Longford county councillor believes the money spent on this speed change could have been better used in supporting enforcement of existing limits.
Fine Gael councillor Garry Murtagh says that the new limits will cause frustration among drivers and could lead to dangerous driving.
He believes the resources could have been better spent on supplementing the Garda Roads Policing Unit.
