A review has recommended the speed limits on all rural local roads in Co Leitrim be cut to 60 kilometres an hour.
Leitrim County Council plans to make the change next month.
Earlier this year, the government passed legislation to lower speed limits, in response to the rising number of road deaths.
They include reducing the speed limits on rural local roads from 80 kilometres an hour to 60 unless special speed limits are adopted by local authorities.
Leitrim County Council carried out a review of these limits and engaged in public consultation.
The review has concluded the new default speed limit of 60 should be introduced for all rural local roads in Co Leitrim, where the current default speed limit is 80.
The council proposes to implement this change from November, unless the Department of Transport advises differently.
However, any special speed limits on rural local roads already in place will remain.
The review will be considered by councillors at a Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District meeting this morning.
