Oran await the winners in the final. Match Report: St Brigid’s 2-18 Clann 3-6. On Tuesday of last week saw our U16s travel to Johnstown knowing that anything short of a victory against Clann na nGael would see the defence of their U16 championship end before the knockout stages of this year’s competition.
The girls didn't delay in putting their mark on the game with a high tempo high pressing game which resulted in them racing into a five-point lead before Clann got a foothold in the game with a goal and a point in quick succession on the counter-attack.
Brigid's led by three points at the first water break and Sarah O'Rourke eased them further ahead in the second quarter with an expertly taken goal to add the Clann keepers name to the many she has bested this season.
St Brigid's went into half time seven points up having restricted Clann to just four scores. This was due in no small part to the cornerbacks, Norah Canny and Jane Hennelly who constantly outfought and outthought the Clann forwards who had a frustrating afternoon and struggled for most of the game to get past the two defenders.
Directly in front of these two, Ciara Fallon and Sally O’Hara ran up and down the channels for the whole game, alternating between impressive attacking and resolute defending in a game where every ball was contested but where the St Brigid's girls won most of the challenges.
In the third quarter, Clann fought hard to claw their way back into the game and scored two goals but unfortunately for them, the St Brigid's forward line were now in the groove and Shauna Loftus found her range and rhythm to keep the scoreboard ticking over for the final two quarters with some wonderfully taken scores.
Alongside her, Faye Loftus continued her consistently prolific scoring run which has seen her have the flags raised at least five times in every championship match she has played this year.
Time and time again during the game, Faye used her strength to collect the ball, create space with some nimble footwork and power the ball with unerring precision between the posts.
Leading by five points at the final water break St Brigid's closed up shop at the back and outscored Clann 6 points to 2 in the final 15 minutes to win the game by nine points and round off the group stages with a third straight victory which keeps them in the hunt for the championship. Team: Amy Gallagher; Jane Hennelly, Emma Gallagher, Norah Canny, Ciara Fallon; Doireann Ni Ruairc (0-1); Sally O’Hara. (0-1); Ria Lennon. (0-5). 9: Johanna Hughes (C); Kara Gallagher (0-1); Abbie Murray (1-1); Hannah Lennon; Faye Loftus (0-5); Shauna Loftus (0-4); Sarah O’Rourke (1-0); Jessica Collins; Marie Flatley; Katie Hamrock; Katie Irwin; Keely Salmon; Lara Deehan.
