A former Psychiatric Hospital Campus in the Midlands is currently under consideration as a location for housing refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine.
St Loman's Hospital in Mullingar was vacated in 2013 when the last remaining services were transferred to a new campus. The campus still hosts psychiatric services with an admissions unit providing acute treatment for male and female residents, while St Edna's provides continuing care for male residents with enduring mental health issues.
Westmeath County Councillor Hazel Smyth put forward a motion at this months Dublin and Mid Leinster Regional Health Forum seeking an update on the historic building's future. In response, the HSE confirmed that while the building was not currently suitable for providing medical care, discussions were under way with Westmeath County Council to use the site as accommodation for Ukrainian refugees. The Estates section of the Health Service are currently awaiting a response from the local authority.
