The Principal of St Mel's College in Longford says he believes some kind of blended learning for students is almost inevitable if social distancing

The Principal of St Mel's College in Longford says he believes some kind of blended learning for students is almost inevitable if social distancing remains in place at the beginning of the new school term.

Declan Rowley was commenting on an interim plan published yesterday which says there's no issue in social distancing for pupils up to second class in primary schools, but that a distance of at least one metre would be recommended in secondary schools.

The St Mel's principal says using those guidelines would mean many of their classrooms would only be able to accommodate around 8 pupils.

Speaking on the Joe Finnegan show this morning Declan Rowley says the learning model that many schools had to use from the middle of March had worked for a lot of pupils, but not for everyone.

He says if schools can't go back to normal in September, some way will have to be found that will allow for every student to access remote learning in some way…
