Staff and residents at an Athlone nursing home were left shocked after an 85 year old resident was seriously assaulted in her room earlier this week.
On Monday, a woman in her 80s was taken to hospital after the attack at Sonas Nursing Home on the Ballymahon Road in Athlone.
A man was arrested at the scene after staff intervened an ended the alleged assault.
54 year old Peter Keaney of 7 Hillside Close, Monksland Roscommon appeared in Court yesterday charged with a section three assault of the woman.
In a statement from the management of the nursing home, they say the resident is recovering well, and they are providing all the necessary care and support needed after the incident.
They have asked for privacy for residents and staff and have confirmed that they are cooperating fully with the Garda investigation into the incident.
