Staff at Mullingar Hospital have been highly praised in a new HIQA inspection report into the rehabilitation unit at the Midland's facility. The inspection, which took place in August of 2023, analyzed the 10-bed Rehabilitation Unit for older persons who are deemed in need of rehabilitation prior to discharge. The Rehabilitation Unit is located on the campus of St Mary’s Care Centre, beside the Regional Hospital Mullingar. As part of the inspection, HIQA staff spoke to patients, staff and management at the unit, as well as observing the delivery of care and record keeping. Patients stated they were ‘happy’ with the care they received and described staff as ‘very good’, 'approachable’ and 'kind
HIQA inspectors were informed that patients were happy with the cleanliness of the unit and the opportunity to take meals with each other. The Rehabilitation Unit was found to be substantially compliant with three of the national standards and partially compliant with one national standard assessed. The unit was found to be Substantially compliant in two areas and partially compliant in one under the Leadership, Governance and Management section. Under Person-Centred Care and Support, the rehab unit was to be compliant in two standards and substantially compliant in one other.
While in the Effective and safe care and support themes, the unit was found substantially and partially complaint in a number of areas. These included the provision of an environment which supports the delivery of high quality, safe and reliable care, and that service providers protect service users from the risk of harm associated with the design and delivery of care. Midlands Regional Hospital Mullingar has prepared an action plan to address the issues highlighted in the HIQA report.
