Residents at a Leitrim Care Home have praised staff for the kindness, care and support shown in a newly released inspection report.
HIQA inspectors conducted an unannounced visit to the Ballinamore Nursing Unit, a purpose-built facility that provides accommodation for 20 residents who require long-term residential care.
While the centre was found to have a calm and welcoming atmosphere, several issues were identified as in need of attention.
Inspectors noted on attending the centre that staff and residents maintained a close relationship, with staff interactions observed as respectful, patient and kind.
Residents told the inspector that they were 'well cared for' and 'wanted for nothing' but the 'days were long'.
According to the report, the majority of residents did not have access to meaningful social activities.
The centre recorded 6 full compliances, 7 substantial compliances and one non compliance.
The Ballinamore Nursing Unit was found to be fully compliant in area including training, visits, complaints and record keeping.
However a number of issues were identified in Infection Control, fire precautions, residents rights and staffing.
With fire precautions, the length of time needed to evacuate the centre was highlighted as requiring review.
Meanwhile, adequate storage space was not provided for resident's equipment, with an assistive chair stored in a communal toilet/shower and a
spare bed stored in the oratory during the inspection.
The main issue highlighted was the Allocation of staff, where levels did not ensure that there was adequate numbers with appropriate skills to meet the needs of residents.
This saw resident's one to one activities neglected, supervision of clients who are fall risk compromised and plans to cover staff on leave not in place.
Centre management have stated that an action plan is in place to tackle the issues identified.
