A HIQA report has praised the care provided to residents at a Longford Nursing Home. The unannounced inspection at St Joseph's Care Centre was carried out in March of this year.
The HSE run centre located in Longford Town provides 24 hour nursing care for up to 65 residents of all dependency levels, male and female, predominantly over 65 years of age.
Those with Dementia, cognitive impairment and acquired brain injury are also cared for. At the time of the inspection earlier this year, 50 residents were present in the centre.
The inspectors observed that residents were supported to enjoy a satisfactory quality of life cared for by a team of staff who were kind, caring and responsive to their needs.
Residents accommodated in the Padre Pio unit expressed how much they enjoyed their newly refurbished accommodation and they were observed participating in a singing and dancing session.
Inspectors noted that visiting arrangements were well catered for with visits occurring throughout the day. The centre was found to be compliant or substantially compliant in all areas of inspection including Infection Control, Governance and Management, and Fire Safety.
One non-compliance was found in the area of Premises, with inspectors noting a lack of storage space in certain units and a lack of clear protocols to ensure maintenance was completed in a timely manner. A number of walls and doors throughout the centre were scuffed and needed to be repaired and repainted, and the residents on Our Lady's Units did not have access to outside space that was safe and suitable for them
In the response section of the report, St Joseph's confirmed that repair works on the outdoor area of Our Lady are now complete and residents have access to the outdoor space.
They also outlined that a review of storage and repairs to walls will be undertaken to come into line with regulations.
