Roscommon County Council expects to have a report on the feasibility of developing a boardwalk along the edge of Lough Ree ready by the end of this year.
The Council hopes to appoint a team to investigate the Ballyleague-based project in the coming weeks.
As part of Just Transition, Roscommon's local authority last year sought funding for a study to examine the possibility of developing a boardwalk along the shore line of Lough Ree.
The 2km project would be located south of the Roscommon village of Ballyleague, and the 'floating boardwalk' over the River Shannon would allow people to access sensitive wetlands in an environmentally friendly way.
However, the plan has proved controversial, with Councillors in Longford bemused that their neighbours are proceeding with plans for a boardwalk on one-side of the River Shannon only.
Longford County Council claimed it was not carrying out a similar feasibility study, which led to some Councillors wondering how a boardwalk could be built over only half of the River Shannon.
As part of a series of updates being provided by projects who received funding under strand one of Just Transition, Roscommon County Council's Director of Services Majella Hunt recently explained that several detailed studies will take place, as well as public consultation with stakeholders in the area - including the local community and Waterways Ireland.
It's hoped the boardwalk can become a major tourist attraction in the region, and help negate the loss of the power station and Bord na Mona peat based employment.
