Former politician Eugene Murphy is calling for a compromise in the row over Ballaghaderreen’s public realm enhancement plan.
Roscommon County Council is spending €4.5 million on upgrading the town.
But residents and businesses are concerned about the loss of 47 car-parking spaces, the widening of footpaths and the narrowing of streets.
Hundreds attended a protest in Ballaghaderreen on Sunday, but Murphy believes the issue can be solved.
He has been speaking to our reporter Eoghan Murphy:
Yesterday, we heard Councillor Tom Crosby rejected suggestions Ballaghaderreen’s controversial public realm project could be completely changed.
Sinn Fein TD Claire Kerrane made the proposal at a major rally on Sunday afternoon – and it was backed by several politicians.
Deputy Kerrane says the planning permission granted for the project can be changed by Roscommon County Council – but councillor Crosby dismissed that.
But speaking to Eoghan Murphy today, Strokestown’s Rory Williams Doyle is backing his Sinn Fein colleague, Deputy Kerrane.
