People in the Shannonside Region would support the founding of a rural focused political party according to a Sligo/Leitrim TD.
Independent TD Marian Harkin and Clare TD Michael McNamara have both signaled that they would support a new group following moves made by Roscommon/Galway TD Michael Fitzmaurice.
Deputy Harkin believes that rural problems are not being given equal weight when compared to Government parties putting other topics forward, such as the Greens progressing Environmental issues.
Speaking to the Let's Talk Show today, The Independent TD says she believes that current political parties in government do not represent the voice of rural Ireland strongly enough.
She says discussions with the Roscommon/Galway TD have not hit a dealbreaker yet:
'It is very clear for anyone to see that if you have a party such as the Greens in government , they have a very significant impact on government policy. The Greens are coming from a particular perspective and I believe that the rural regeneration perspective is not given equal waiting. There is no deal breaker between Michael and myself as we agree on a lot of things, not on everything.'
