The availability and provision of student accommodation will be a key focus of the TUS Student's Union according to its new president.
Niall Naughton took over the role this week from outgoing president Aine Daly.
The Roscommon man previously worked as the Union's Deputy President and Welfare Officer.
TUS is the amalgamation of Limerick and Athlone Institutes of Technology with 14,000 students spread across six campuses.
Speaking to Let's Talk today, the new SU President says that recent good news for long term student housing developments locally is to be welcomed.
However, he believes Athlone is in desperate need of more short term solutions for existing and upcoming students.
''We are trying our hardest to try and come up with interim solutions for students that may be attending the Technological University of the Shannon. But we really do hope that the Government start investing and start looking at reforming. We've also been given confirmation here within the the Midlands sector that up in the Lissywollen area student accommodation will be built, but however that's not going to be built until 2024. So we do need to come up with an interim solution and we need to come up with it fast.''
