A public consultation will take place this afternoon over the potential future of the former Connolly Barracks in Longford.

The site has remained somewhat derelict since, with the LWETB expanding into a portion of the property, with the main barrack grounds being used for various community events.

The project received close to €200,000 in funding from the Town Centre First Heritage Revival Scheme towards a feasibility report and the compiling of a planning application earlier this year.

The funds were allocated through the THRIVE which is the Town Centre First Heritage Revival Scheme, a fund to help local authorities and the public to re-imagine town centres.

The Connolly Barracks plan includes a new county museum as a key element of the plan, with a number of other elements such as business start up spaces, media centre and civic spaces all currently on the table.

The main barracks building is a listed structure and has remained empty since the official closure of the base in 2009.

The general public and local and regional community groups are invited to attend the barracks today from 4.30 until 7.30 where they can speak to the architect and put forward their views.
