A Leitrim woman who's been appointed to the National Dairy Council says environmental practice and sustainability are the main challenges facing farmers in the dairy sector right now.
Majella McCafferty who has worked extensively with local dairy co-op in recent years has been appointed as Farm Advocacy Manager at the Dairy Council.
She's worked with the council on milk awards previously and was instrumental in advising and coaching three farms to win the overall national title.
Speaking on the Let's Talk show today Majella says she's excited about taking on her latest role and helping farmers maintain viability and excel in their sector…
'Everything is going to be environmental regulations and how to fit your farm around that and be as sustainable as possible.
Improving on your water quality, looking at your habitat and biodiversity, looking at whats going on on your farm like your wildlife cover.
What you already have to use that will make your farm as profitable as possible.
For instance, lowering fertilizer use. putting in your clover and fixing your nitrogen.
My challenge from my side is to get what's going on at farm level to the national level. '
