Negotiations are ongoing between three parties regarding a coalition to control Roscommon County Council for the next five years. Talks are currently taking place between Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and a number of Independents to decide who will have power in the chamber. The last term saw a partnership between the eight Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael councillors and Independents.
Fianna Fáil have boosted their numbers this time around from four to five and so the two main parties now have nine councillors to lead a potential coalition. A deal is expected to be struck prior to the first meeting of the new Roscommon council on Friday week when a new Cathaoirleach and Leas Cathaoirleach will be elected. The much sought after Cathaoirleach's position includes an allowance of €20,000 while positions on various committees will also be agreed.
