The Tanaiste believes regeneration works on Roscommon Market Square have breathed new life back into the town.
Speaking on a visit to the county during the week, Leo Varadkar stated the 9 million euro Government investment shows what can be achieved to tackle dereliction in towns like Roscommon.
He says it's now about trying to encourage people to live in the town and he hopes those with vacant and dilapidated properties will avail of the Croi Connaithe fund.
This scheme provides grants of up to €30,000 for the refurbishment of derelict homes for occupation as a private residence.
Speaking on the square in Roscommon, the Fine Gael leader says there’s a fantastic atmosphere in Roscommon following the public realm works.
"I have to say I'm very impressed with how the Square has been rejuvenated. The last time I was here, the Square was looking a little bit down at heel, there was a lot of dereliction and it's really great to see what can be achieved when Government invests in the public realm. It has really lifted the town and I think created a much better urban atmosphere here in the town of Roscommon and we want to encourage more and more people to move back into the towns and part of that is projects like this - renovating the Square.."
