The Tanáiste and Fianna Fail Leader has hit back at claims that the party has not provided a Roscommon based candidate for the upcoming General Election. The party has selected a single candidate to contest the election in Roscommon Galway, in the form of Dr Martin Daly, a Ballygar based GP and former IMO President. Roscommon Senator and former TD Eugene Murphy had sought a place on the ballot paper but was unsuccessful at the party's selection convention at the start of October.
Eugene Murphy has not ruled out running as an Independent in the general election and has stated previously that Roscommon needs a local representative in Dail Eireann. Micheál Martin was in Roscommon today where he spoke to Shannonside FM News and hit back over claims that Dr Daly was not a Roscommon candidate:
The Fianna Fail leader was also asked about whether he would support Senator Murphy for another term in the Seanad. While he confirmed there would always be a role for the Scramoge native in the party, he refused to confirm if that would be in Seanad Éireann:
