The Tánaiste says the government and the HSE have been working "flat out" to tackle overcrowding in hospitals nationwide. However, the Irish Nurses' and Midwives' Organisation says 710 people were left waiting for beds in hospitals today.
150 of them were at University Hospital Limerick - an unwelcome, all-time record at the facility. Speaking on the steps of Capitol Hill in Washington DC, Tánaiste Micheál Martin described the situation at UHL as 'challenging':
