Clean up and structural assessments are ongoing in Leitrim Village this afternoon following a freak destructive tornado yesterday. Numerous properties, cars and boats were severely damaged yesterday afternoon. No one was seriously injured in the incident yesterday that saw heavy localised winds rip through the picturesque waterway village. The roof was torn off one building in the centre of the village and severe damage caused to surrounding properties.
The tornado's path took it out through the Waterways Marina where a number of boats were capsized and part of the jetty destroyed. An Taosieach Leo Varadkar has arrived in the village by helicopter in the last hour to meet with residents, local representatives and first responders. The main R280 remains closed through the village today as engineers preform structural assessments and repairs. Leitrim County Council state the village will reopen to traffic once it has been deemed safe.
