Councillors from the Ballinasloe area are calling on the Government to step in and help employees affected by the closure of a local Dairy plant.
It was announced on Friday that Arrabawn Co-Op in Kilconnell will cease processing operations by Summer 2023.
While half of the 110 staff on site are due to transfer with the business there are fears for 55 jobs.
At a special meeting of the Ballinasloe Municipal District today, councillors called on the Minister for Agriculture and the Tanaiste to establish a task force to ensure a responsible transition.
Cathoirleach of the Ballinasloe MD, Councillor Evelyn Parsons says the site must be used for alternative purpose that will preserve jobs locally:
While the lights are on in East Galway in Kilconnell we are asking as a municipal district and all the Councillors that the Government, the Minister for Agriculture and the Tanaiste that a task force is put together.
A laser focus needs to be put on the area for replacement jobs and a seamless transition.
