There's an urgent need for an armed support unit in the Sligo Leitrim division.
That's the view of one local TD, who raised concerns in the Dail over the level of burglaries in the area.
It follows the attack on 73-year-old Tom Niland in Skreen, County Sligo, last month, which left him fighting for his life.
Independent TD Marian Harkin is calling on the government to introduce a number of measures to combat aggravated burglaries:
"To look at revising the sentencing and bail guidelines especially for repeat offenders, and secondly, and I've raised this issue before, Sligo-Leitrim is the only division in the west and north-west without an Armed Support Unit."
