Over 17,000 homes and business are on the notice.

Longford TD Joe Flaherty says he hopes the boil water notice for the town and surrounding areas will be lifted by Monday week at the latest.

The Fianna Fail Deputy says he's been told by Irish Water that extensive works have taken place at the Lough Forbes treatment plant over the last week, and testing has been ongoing.

Irish Water has agreed the EPA will carry out an audit of the plant on next Tuesday and that will be made available to next Thursday to them, as well as the HSE and Longford council.

Over 17,000 homes and businesses in the Longford area have been subject to the notice since the 4th of this month after the cryptosporidium barrier at the treatment plant was compromised.

There had been fears the notice could remain in place for several more weeks, but speaking on Let's Talk today, Deputy Flaherty says he hopes the EPA audit will help move things along.
