A Sligo/Leitrim TD is calling on the HSE to immediately recruit additional specialist staff at Sligo University Hospital.
There are currently just three neurological nurses at the northwest facility which is significantly below the recommended HSE and international guideline of seven.
Marc McSharry says it's unacceptable that 2,000 people are waiting for a neurology appointment in the region.
Speaking in the Dáil, the Sligo deputy questioned the salaries of HSE officials remarking that money is needed on the ground for clinical services.
However, Minister for Older People Mary Butler says a third consultant neurologist will be appointed in Sligo in 2022.
Deputy McSharry says the issue needs to be addressed as quickly as possible with the Northwest having the highest number of neurological patients in the country.
