Mr Leyden was first elected to Roscommon County Council 50 years ago before being elected to Dáil Éireann in 1977.

Former Minister of State Terry Leyden has been appointed Honorary Consul for the Republic of Azerbaijan with jurisdiction for Ireland. Mr Leyden was first elected to Roscommon County Council 50 years ago before being elected to Dáil Éireann in 1977. He went on to spend 18 years in the Seanad before retiring from politics in 2020.

Mr Leyden officially resigned from Fianna Fáil upon taking up his honorary role with the Republic of Azerbaijan on the nomination of President Ilham Aliyev. He received his official parchment from Ambassador Elin Suleymanov, Ambassador to the United Kingdom and Ireland in London last Friday. Speaking exclusively to Shannonside News, he said it was honour for both himself and County Roscommon:
