The Minister for Health believes no day care centres for elderly people in Leitrim should remain closed due to COVID concerns.
Earlier this month County Councillors claimed that centres in Mohill and Manorhamilton had reduced services as a result of ongoing fears over the spread of the virus.
The HSE is being urged to reopen the facilities as the country faces into the autumn with growing fears that older people will be left isolated without day facilities in their communities.
Sligo-Leitrim TD Marian Harkin raised the issue in the Dáil this week with Health Minister Stephen Donnelly who admits no centres should be using COVID as a reason to stay shut.
"At this point COVID should not be being used as a reason to keep day care facilities closed. There was a lot of work done to reopen them and there were a lot of supports provided. Deputy, I will engage with the HSE on exactly the points you've just raised and ask them to look at the centres in question".
