Three people have been arrested and over €100,000 in cash seized as local Gardaí raided properties connected to international crime gangs operating in the region.
Gardaí in Westmeath supported by the Department of Social Protection, the local Divisional Crime Scene investigation unit, and Garda Dog and Armed Support Units conducted searches of ten properties in Mullingar over the course of Tuesday and Wednesday.
The operation was part of ongoing investigations into the activities of an Eastern European organised criminal gang operating throughout the midlands.
€104,500 along with a number of stolen vehicle parts, jewellery and watches with an approximate value of €50,000 were seized by Gardaí during the searches.
A number of financial accounts containing in excess of €80,000 were also frozen as part of the investigation.
A man in his 40s and a woman in her 30s were arrested on Tuesday as part of the operation, with the pair since released without charge and a file set to be prepared for the DPP.
Three further searches conducted in the town yesterday resulted in the recovery of a stolen car and the arrest of a man in his 20s, who was charged and appeared in court yesterday.
