Dr Tony Holohan will return to his post as Chief Medical Officer next week.
He had stepped back for family reasons in July, with Dr Ronan Glynn taking his place.
Back in July Dr Tony Holohan revealed his wife would be receiving palliative care after she was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2012.
The Chief Medical Officer stepped back from his role, after becoming a well-known figure nationwide during lockdown.
However, he is due to return to his post next week, which has been welcomed by the Health Minister Stephen Donnelly:
Dr Holohan will return with the country seeing an increase in COVID-19 cases nationwide.
NPHET is meeting to discuss the situation around the country, but with particular concern for Monaghan, Roscommon, Cork and Galway.
DCU Professor Anthony Staines believes the national picture will also be on the agenda.
Monaghan and Roscommon have already seen their 14 day incidence rates moving above 100, which leaves them open for more restrictions.
As the spread of the virus continues to rise, Dr Tony Holohan returns to his post facing a tough challenge to bring that back down.
