The maximum sentence for assaulting or threatening to assault a Garda or other on-duty emergency workers has increased from 7 to 12 years. It's one of a range of new criminal offences, as well as tougher sentences for existing offences, which come into effect from today.
Justice Minister Helen McEntee says ensuring the safety of Gardaí and all other frontline workers has been one of her main priorities. A new standalone offence of stalking, with a maximum sentence of up to ten years, has also been created and is now in effect.
