Waterways Ireland has announced major plans to improve access to the River Shannon at three locations in the Shannonside region.
A new Shannon Tourism masterplan is being launched this morning to develop opportunities along Ireland's longest river.
Leitrim, Longford and Roscommon County Councils have all contributed to this new plan which will see a major drive for tourism focused on the River Shannon in the next nine years.
The plan aims to identify areas for key infrastructure and tourism growth with several key areas of development identified including in the Shannonside region.
New and enhanced water amenities are to be developed locally, such as a slipway at Golden island in Athlone to provide direct access to the river
8 new cruising berths will also be developed at Athlone railway bridge.
The red bridge in Ballymahon will see the development of a new activity hub which will, allow cruisers to berth there as well as a low level floating jetty.
Roosky, on the border of Leitrim and Roscommon, will also see the development of 10 cruiser berths in the heart of the village to provide direct access to the river.
Further areas of remote moorings along the river will also be developed, including at Lough Ree and the north Shannon area.
Head of activities at Failte Ireland, Fiona Monaghan, hopes it'll make the region even more appealing for tourists.
